Sorting through clothes when preparing to downsize can be an emotional process. The items evoke memories of good and bad times. For seniors, these clothes are a reminder of a life that no longer exists. Donating or discarding them is an acknowledgement of that reality.
These are the questions I ask my clients when they are deciding whether to keep, donate, sell, or discard an item:
When was the last time you wore it?
Is it still stylish?
Does it fit?
Do you love it?
When do you see yourself wearing it in the future?
Is it stained or ripped? Is the elastic still stretchy?
Is it an original designer piece that could be sold?
After a short while, my clients start to internalize these questions, forming their own unique criteria for which items to keep.
Handbags. The bags that seniors use most often are very lightweight and worn across the body. This leaves their hands free for canes or holding banisters. Remember to empty each bag before sending it for donation.
Shoes. No matter how many beautiful shoes are in your closet, the comfortable ones with easy closures are worn 99% of the time. For most older women, shoes with heels can be uncomfortable and cause unsteady footing.
Would you like help sorting through your closets in preparation for a move or just to make some room? We can arrange for donations as well as sales of designer clothes.
