What Is My Stuff Worth?
The process of selling and donating my client’s belongings is one of the most challenging parts of my business. Judith Moves You, through many resources, helps our clients disperse their belongings in the most efficient and economical way possible. The marketplace for second hand goods is not strong.
Here are some realities to consider as you think about selling or donating your belongings:
A recent client had a lovely name brand mid-century credenza. On an online auction site, a similar one was listed for $10,000. He decided that $7,000 would be acceptable. I sent pictures to 3 dealers. They all came back with approximately the same offer - $900. He was in disbelief and suspicious of my knowledge and connections. Then, his children listed the items on several other websites. What was the outcome, just days before he moved? He accepted the $900.
Now the good news. Real antiques, fine jewelry, and fine art, in most cases do retain or increase their value. Your silver flatware is worth at least what it weighs. Unbeknownst to many clients there are items such as good costume jewelry that have value. These categories of items are much easier to sell and there are many good venues. Occasionally, an item is worth much more than anticipated, such as a first edition book, but it is rare! All auctions today have an online component. Dealers can access to the prices that have recently been paid (or not paid) for items similar to yours, anywhere in the world! There are few surprises.
If you try to sell, it takes time – finding the best venue, researching prices, taking photos, back and forth with the dealers/websites, getting bids, entertaining offers if there are any, arranging for transportation, enacting Plan B when the item doesn’t sell, etc. If you start this process 6 weeks before your move, it is hard to get top dollar.
Personally, I very recently bought a good couch that turns out to be a bad match for my home. After weeks on several websites at a 30% discount from the price I paid, I have no buyers. So, even brand new furniture is hard to resell.
That said, Judith Moves You will use our many resources to find the best ways to sell, donate or otherwise disperse of your unneeded belongings. Ready for a free consultation? Call us today!
