All move managers help sort, sell, donate and discard belongings; create floorplans; hire, schedule and oversee movers; interface with management of apartment buildings; unpack; resettle and handle a myriad of other details.
A Senior Move Manager takes into consideration many other issues.
During the initial phone call, clients or their adult children give me an overview of the situation, but I don't get the whole picture until we meet. During the in-home consultation I am looking and listening for many clues that will help me plan for a smooth move.
I want to know:
Does this person want to move, or is the move necessary because of failing health?
How is their hearing, eyesight, ability to stand and move around?
Do they have the physical and emotional stamina to sort for three or more hours at a time?
What is their anxiety or stress level?
Do they have emotional support from family and/or friends? Conversely, are there complex family relationships that have to be navigated?
Is there any memory loss? Are they competent to make decisions?
Is there a helpful home aide who might assist during the sorting?
Has there been periodic de-cluttering or are sorting a full 30, 40 or 50 years of belongings?
Does the client want to be involved in every decision or can we handle some of the details on our own?
The answers to these questions help me:
understand and plan for the unique needs of this client,
gauge the time and support needed for the whole process, and
calculate an accurate cost estimate.
